Tell us about yourself:

I was born and raised in the United States Virgin Islands. I have always loved to draw, but design became another one of my passions later on in life.

What is the inspiration behind your poster design?

I was really excited to receive the prompt and color option. As soon as I saw “Young, Gifted, and Black” this idea of a young school girl riding her homemade hoverboard came to mind. Growing up playing Sonic Riders and watching anime with my brother inspired this piece. Also watching Codename: Kids Next door, I loved how talented these kids were.

Why do you love being creative?

I love being creative, because it gives me the freedom and space to bring the ideas in my head to life.

Tell us about your experiences in the design world…

Harder than I thought it would be. Growing up in the Caribbean, then coming to Pittsburgh for school and work, it’s the small things that begin to wear and tear you down.

How can we create a more inclusive design world and ensure that Black people are represented?

Honestly, we might have to create that inclusive world for ourselves, from the ground up.

In general… How can we make more equity or equality for us?

Creating black lead institutions is a good start. Someone I know was hired at an all black design firm, and his experience has been so positive. So despite the difficulties, I think the power lies within us.
