Tell us about yourself:

I currently work as an information designer specializing in visual analytics. In my free time I enjoy watercolor and acrylic painting, cross stitch embroidery, and sewing. This is my first digital art project.

What is the inspiration behind your poster design?

The phrase “strength in numbers” immediately caught my attention. While creating a mood board for the project, I came across the Ethiopian proverb “When spiders unite they can tie down a lion.” I think societal problems often feel insurmountable and that change is hopeless. But I truly think that we can accomplish so much if we work together. We are spiders weaving our webs together.

Please tell us why you think inclusivity and solidarity are essential in our society…

I think inclusivity and solidarity are vital if we want to continuously improve the world we live in. All voices are important and valid, but not all voices are given the opportunity to be heard or considered. Without solidarity, it is unlikely that these voices will be heard in the ways that they have always deserved.

How can we create a more inclusive design world and ensure that everyone is represented?

I think it is incumbent upon decision makers in the design community to make a conscious effort to improve inclusivity and representation. Additionally, groups that have been historically over-represented should use their influence to shift opportunities to groups that have are underrepresented.
