I often struggle to write about myself. But, I am Daniella Uche-Oji and I am a 2D, 3D and Motion designer. I was born in Houston, TX but raised in Lagos, Nigeria and I believe that those experiences allow me to bring a unique blend of Western and African influences to her work. Three things I have always loved Art, storytelling and computers. Design has allowed me to blend these things conveniently and I must say that I am lucky to have found my purpose in design.
Culture, Lagos, Matthew 5:14: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
For me it’s a lifestyle. I can’t identify with anything else. I love that it allows me to empathize with the world, connect with my heavenly father and ultimately come up with cool ideas that can change assist in modernizing the world and making it an easier place for people to live in. Plus, creatives are the trendsetters. I am a self-proclaimed “Advocate of the creative community”
One major thing is that as a black designer chances are you’ll be the only black/African person in many rooms. I was the only black woman in most of 3D animation classes, till date and at work. It’s a similar experience. We need more of us in these rooms.
As black people we need to get out of the consumer box and start owning and creating our own stuff. At this point we are too comfortable being mainly consumers. I know it can be difficult it a country that ignores you but, be persistent and don’t give up. If people have been successful at it before we can be too.
Transparency, Community, Effort, Innovation and Ownership. This is the best way I can answer this. It starts with us debunking our own issues with each other first, create more things and on the level that would wow the world without fear then, circulate information and educate each other. Don’t hold back because you think you’ll be ignored- Even if you are it doesn’t matter. All you need is one Yes!
