I’m Tomekah an artist based in England, UK
I create textural illustrations inspired by my life, afrofuturism and the working class experience. You can find my work in a range of contexts including children’s books, animation, ceramics and gifts.
I wanted to steer away from drawing the racial trauma/tension in the film and thought about how to take reference from this without explicitly depicting those parts of the film.
I ended up at this design focusing on the community and culture of African Americans/wider Black diaspora which I think is also a key message in the film. The two characters sit on a floating Brooklyn staircase (wrapped in Caribbean & African iconography) looking towards the future.

I love how it makes me feel, when I’m being creative it’s a time where I’m able to relax fully and get lost in the piece or project I’m working on.
