Tell us about yourself:

My name is Jack Warner. I’m a graphic designer and illustrator from the KC area, and I am graduating from JCCC this year. I’m a passionate storyteller, and I hope to create children’s books someday. I also have a tarantula named Petey, and you’re more than welcome to pet him!

What is the inspiration behind your poster design?

My inspiration behind this design is a quote from one of my favorite movies: Mary and Max. “Dr. Bernard Hasselhoff also said that everyone’s lives are like a very long sidewalk. Some are well-paved. Others, like mine, have cracks, banana skins, and cigarette butts. Your sidewalk is like mine, but probably not as many cracks.”

This quote resonates with me because it’s spoken by an autistic character. Our sidewalks aren’t as smooth or sturdy as those of most neurotypicals, yet we keep moving forward anyway. The phrase “All Together Now” stayed with me because it reminds me that we can still connect and walk alongside neurotypicals. As the quote continues, “Hopefully, one day our sidewalks will meet, and we can share a can of condensed milk.”

Please tell us why you think inclusivity and solidarity are essential in our society…

I believe inclusivity and solidarity are essential in our society because humans are a codependent species. Although we have different needs, backgrounds, and perspectives, we’re all dependent on each other whether we like it or not. When we have each other’s backs, we create a stronger community for everyone.

How can we create a more inclusive design world and ensure that everyone is represented?

We should encourage other fellow designers to be themselves in a way that’s both fun and expressive, and inclusive, collaborative projects such as this can help a lot. Neurodivergence isn’t a subject I often discuss, and I’m glad that Pick Progress allowed me to express it in a way I’m familiar with.
